Lunch 11 AM August 26, South 40 Cafe, Westmoreland, Ks.

Post by schoolmaster »

It looks like next Wednesday could be a perfect day to ride, plus I think it will also be a great day to be a ROMEO, so I thought we should take advantage of great riding weather, Highway 99 curves and scenery and head out to the South 40. It's been quite awhile since we've been there, the food is always good, and everyone likes to meet there, so why not just go! They serve breakfast and you can also order off of the lunch menu prior to 11, but the lunch specials won't be available until around 11 or just a little before. The lunch specials happen to be on Wednesday a smothered pork chop or spaghetti and meatballs.

So why not take advantage of the weather and stretch it out a bit and meet us at the South 40 Cafe between 10:30 and 11 on the 26th. If you've not been there, it's easy to find right on Hwy 99 as you go through Westmoreland.

And for those of you who want to know:

Westmoreland & Pottawatomie County History

How Westmoreland was Named

Established in 1858 when a post office was instituted with John McKimens as postmaster. Mr. McKimens named the post office after Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, where he originated.
Pottawatomie County History

Organized in 1856. Named for the Pottawatomie Indians, whose reservation at the opening of the Kansas Territory for settlement, and for years afterward, embraced a large portion of the geographical area of the County.

Territorial Kansas History

The period from 1854 to 1861 was an important time in Kansas' past. Visit Territorial Kansas for information.
Westmoreland, the county seat of Pottawatomie county, is located in the central part of the county on the Kansas Southern & Gulf R. R., which connects with the Union Pacific at Blaine, 8 miles north. It has 1 national and 2 state banks, an opera house, 2 newspapers and all the general lines of business activity.
There are daily stage lines to Louisville and Wamego on the south line of the county.
The population in 1910 was 500.
The town was platted in 1871 by Volney Baker. Subsequent additions have been made by J. Rachel Artier and A. C. Cochrun.
It was made the county seat by a vote of the people in 1879, but not removed until 1882.
Being a comparatively new town Westmoreland is one of the smallest county seat towns in the eastern part of the state.

RIDE REPORT: August 26, South 40 Cafe, Westmoreland, Ks.

We're getting even for all those rainy days earlier in the summer that made riding a challenge on some days. If there has ever been better riding weather in August, I can't remember when. Light breeze, partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 70's and 80's and green everywhere you look makes for a rider's dream! The official Hoser count today was 43 with an especially nice turnout from the Kansas City contingent which was nice to see. A Westmoreland destination for lunch allowed those guys to pick up a few extra riding miles on a beautiful day! There was no quiz today over the reading material that had been assigned which elicited a big sigh of relief from Mike H., because although he studied and felt ready, was suffering from text anxiety. No test allowed him to relax and concentrate on the pie stop destination for later in the day :D

All in all, I'd have to mark this a very successful day. When I pulled in the garage I had knocked out about 220 miles, had a great lunch, spent time with some good friends, cleaned up my bike with a nice cool breeze running through the garage, and settled down on my deck with a nice, cool beverage. Yep, it was a GREAT DAY TO BE A ROMEO!!

This beautiful GT was following me on 99 north of Wamego so on some of those long loping hills I let the old Indian loose a bit, but the GT riding two up stayed right on my tail, (several miles above the posted limit I believe). Nice ride Gary!

Walt has having a little sweet tea at his birthday party. Ken and Mel seem upset that there wasn't any birthday cake. C'mon guys, lighten up. (NOTE TO SELF: Next year on this date we're going to have a big ol' party to celebrate #85, so remember, you're all invited!!)

Oops, didn't mean to put this picture in, but had been hearing about a new restaurant in Alma from several people, so rode down there to scout it out after lunch. The owner's name is Deborah and she is really a nice lady and would love to have us sometime for lunch. So I put this one on the list for next time it's time to "go West young men!"
