Lunch 10:30 AM, June 24, Cozy Cafe, Fairview, Ks

Post by schoolmaster »

It looks like we are finally getting a break from Wednesday rain as it is supposed to be clear and sunny for this ride. Although the high is supposed to be in the low 90's by mid to late afternoon it should be pleasant for a late morning ride. I have set this lunch ride for 10:30 to get us there when it's a little cooler and also because this place is rather small and they have a regular lunch crowd that often fills them up at noon. So if we eat at 10:30 we should be out of there by the time their regular lunch crowd shows up.

I scouted this restaurant a few weeks ago and I think you are going to really like it. It has been open for 60 years in the same spot and has been owned by only two families during that time, 50 years by the first family and now 10 years for this one. It is located off of the main highway on what appears a long time ago to have been old Hwy 36 that at that time ran through town. It is a quaint place, clean and neat as a pin! Linda told me that they would be serving roast beef, roast pork, goulash and beef and noodles as specials that day.

They are also open for breakfast but they shut the breakfast grill down a little before 9:30 and start preparing for lunch, normally starting at 11 but they are opening at 10:30 to accommodate us.

So lets all get together at the:

Cozy Cafe

This is my first ride, do I need to RSVP to somebody to get a head count or just show up?

Heaven's no Bob, no RSVP required. We are know for our informality and lack of decorum. Just show up a little early and get acquainted. That's the Romeo way. :D

You would, except I'm in Dillard GA right now so it'll be hard for me to make the trip. Enjoy yourself! :) They'll be lots of others! Maybe I'll see you in a couple weeks.

Ride Report: June 24, Cozy Cafe, Fairview, Ks

According to the Hozer count there were 36 motorcycles on the street at Fairview today and there were at least 3 two-ups and two that showed up for breakfast before the count so we must have had 41 ROMEOS take advantage of the opportunity to share the delights of the Cozy Cafe. If you weren't in Fairview for lunch today, I don't know where you ate lunch but I can guarantee you it wasn't as good as the Cozy Cafe, even if you ate lunch at your mother's house. We waited until 10:30 and we pretty much filled the Cozy, although there were a couple of booths still open for local diners, and a few started to wander in as we were leaving.

People hung around quite awhile after lunch and visited, but everyone was keeping an eye on the thermometer. Bucky, Bill, and I dawdled around a little bit on the way home and we paid the price. By the time I rode into Lawrence the clock on the bank was reading 97, so that last half hour of riding time was starting to end up on the not pleasant side! But it was still a great day to be a ROMEO! Thanks to everyone that showed up today and a special thank you to Linda and her staff at the Cozy Cafe. If you are ever going through Fairview around chow time, it would be worth your time to drive a block off the highway and eat at the Cozy Cafe. We will definitely be back there again.

It looks like Linda is giving Larry #3 a serious piece of advice in the background. Bill's heard it before so he's waiting by the door.

These two did an absolutely superb job of taking care of us today. Many thanks to them for such good service and doing it with a big smile on their faces.

A little peek through the kitchen window showed that the owner Linda, in black, was definitely in charge of the food coming out to the dining room. And was it ever delicious, like the sign says, just good ol' home cookin'!

I understand that Bucky poked his head in the kitchen to thank the ladies for doing such a great job and he got a little sample of the goulash after he had just polished off a huge order of the pork roast and dressing.

Yep, the Oatmeal Gang/K C Group, made the LUNCH ride. Maybe 1 or 2 Romeo's still inside, and 1 was the photo-journalist! Anyway, we explained to the waitress that we were from the Kansas City group, not to be confused with the Topeka group. She laughed and said we were welcome, AND a lot quieter than the other bunch. We thanked her, and scarfed up the tasty leftovers!
After lunch we took the long way home, including a stop for ice cream and/or drinks at McD's in Leavenworth, and I rolled in the driveway about 20 after 4. Was it a little warm? Yes! Was it a little sweaty? Yes! Was it a good day for a ride? Yes! HELLO, it's Kansas, and it's summertime!! Makes you wonder how the pioneers made it, in the heat of the day, with no AC to hurry home to!
