Lunch 11 AM, April 15, Whistle Stop Cafe, Melvern, Ks.

Post by swanee »

Well weather.com has got the rain chance for Wednesday whittled down to 10% with sunshine and 74 degrees so if that's right we couldn't ask for much better...I hope they're right :!: Let's head back to the Melvern Whistle Stop this time (there's more than one Whistle Stop the ROMEO's hit now and then so make sure you've got the right town ;) )

They do serve breakfast 'til 1100 for the early arrivals but lunch will not be ready until 1100. Robin said the special will be a dish that I can't say I've had lately: BBQ meatballs--this is obviously not the typical Italian variety it's something different she said is quite good and very popular with their regular clientele when they serve it. For the less adventurous appetites who prefer the old standbys, this place also has great burgers, pork tenders etc the usual stuff you can order off the menu.

See you there at:

OK we didn't quite get the 74 degrees (more like the 50's) but that's okay, we did have a nice dry day and even had the sun peek out for a few minutes 8-) That lured some 37 ROMEO's and 32 bikes lining all up and down the east side of the street in Melvern and for the first time we over-flowed the "back room" where they hide us from the locals  Enough to have the local gendarmes patrolling up and down main street and even dropping in the cafe to make sure us over-the-hill Brandos didn't get out of hand  Though a few of us who came in "late" at 11 and sat in the front room had to wait a little while the BBQ meatball special was worth it--every bit as good as Robin said! It was a good enough day that afterward several headed out for more riding and pie.

Mick & Hoser (anybody else?) took a few photos which hopefully they will be posting later. Or pics can be sent to me email snslawr(at)yahoo(dot)com and I will get them attached here. Thanks to all for a great ROMEO day!

I asked one of the waitress' why they called the cops so early in our visit (we hadn't had time to get roudy), and she said they NEVER come in the cafe??? The manager guy (I guess), said he wished we'd come back--it seems we attract the local populace (including the police).
Someone out in the front part of the cafe owe's Don an appology--it seems he snagged Don's breakfast while it was on it's way to the back room and we were finished before Don even got his food. But, being the nice guy's we are, we all waited for him (the fact that he new the way home might of played a small part---but not much---well maybe--)!

Sorry I didn't get these posted yesterday, but my boss had a big list of things for me to do when I got home and apparently a ROMEO POST wasn't on the list! A big thanks to Swanee for picking the rides the last couple of weeks. He did a great job and everyone seemed to appreciate his efforts. I forgot my camera yesterday so took just a few pics with my phone so I'll go ahead and post them so those that didn't make it yesterday can see what fun they missed ;)

Although it was a little cooler than expected yesterday, it was still a great day to ride, as well as a great day to be a ROMEO! It looks like weather is going to be pretty nice next week for a ride, but I'll hold off until tomorrow to get a more up to date weather prediction and post the ride shortly after.

This was the crew that ate in the front dining room. Mike can use this photo to gather evidence on identifying the culprit that stole Don's breakfast.

As Swanee mentioned, there were a lot of BBQ meatballs that came trucking out of the kitchen yesterday.

I noticed that there were several ROMEOS that took advantage of the easy access to the library to stop in and do some light reading.

It must have been payroll day for the railroaders yesterday and this bank was carrying a lot of cash, judging on the amount of law enforcement in town. Although I did see a couple of officers walking through the restaurant carrying a wanted poster with a picture of someone that looked like a younger version of Mike Herrman. Mmmmm?

I thought this might be Dan for a minute, but then I remembered he has to have wheels on his plane to land.

Thanks for the pics Mick--not bad at all for a phone! Next time I will try to remember to at least bring my "not-too-bright-phone" that kinda sorta takes pictures if not a real camera
