It’s time to head south for a change, so I asked a few of the guys for some suggestions. Junior suggested the American Legion post in Winfield, and it turns out that my friend Tiny heads up their Legion Riders group. I think we can trust these guys to steer us right, so let’s have lunch in Winfield on March 7. Winfield isn’t as small as some of the towns we visit, but I’m sure the Legion post can use a bit of extra business.
The menu is fairly extensive for a small place. They have soups and salads; sandwiches and burgers; steaks, chicken and seafood; and a good selection of appetizers and side dishes. No mention of dessert, but I bet Gen. Bob can find ice cream or pie somewhere on the road home.
The weather looks pretty good right now: fifty-six degrees with a slight chance of rain. If the day dawns too wet or cold for your taste (or riding gear,) jump in the car. Winfield is about fifty miles and an hour’s travel time from Wichita (perhaps a little less on a motorcycle…) or ten miles and fifteen minutes from downtown Oxford. These folks have invited us to eat in their establishment, so let’s make a good showing.

No guarantees, but the Weather Channel forecast indicates that we might be able to get to Winfield and back to Wichita before it rains. It looks like a high of sixty-six in Wichita, and sixty-nine in Winfield. More wind, but a lot of us will be going north and south most of the way.

Junior knew what he was talking about - the guys at the Legion post took really good care of us. We had fourteen people, on eleven bikes, show up in Winfield. It was windy, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. The rain held off, as well, so it was a good day to ride. Ron came eighty-two miles from Moundridge, and Ben made the two mile trip from his home. I have one photo of the bikes parked outside. John took some shots of the group inside; maybe he'll post them here later.
