Another trip...

Post by Robin »

I hope everyone is enjoying these trips, no one has said much. Anyway heres another one..

August 2008 Colorado Trip

We decided to go on an anniversary ride to coincide with my birthday. Our anniversary was the end of June, but a tragedy occurred and we couldn’t leave.
We left Tuesday in the early morning hours, hit I-70 and rolled. We stopped at the little cafe in Cheyenne Wells for one of their great cheeseburgers. We then hauled hiney on into Cripple Creek as it was getting late, and we wanted to be sure we could get a cabin at the KOA.. Bad news tho, as we were approaching Divide Colorado, Glenda lost her rear brakes. We went on into the KOA at Cripple Creek. I checked the brake fluid, and tried to bleed the brake , but didn’t help any so we concluded it was the master cylinder. This was stressful as this was to be a RIDING vacation, not sit at the dealership for a couple days waiting for repairs. We called the Colorado Springs HD dealer and they said to have it there by 830 am the next morning and they would look at it, but they need the bike there all day. We decided to give them a try, and if they needed it all day, then we would get a hold of Butch, a friend of ours in Colorado Springs and try to find a MC ourselves. Oh, it was in the low 30’s temp when we left for the dealership. Remember, Cripple Creek is at 9494 elevation. We were lucky, they took it right in, and fixed it, so we were off and running again. We roared on up to Victor, actually got off the bikes and looked around at the old buildings and stuff. We ate lunch there as well. Then we went to Cripple Creek, donated some money in the casinos, and finally went back to the KOA. The next day (cold again), we loaded up the bikes and leaded to Leadville. We looked around there a bit, and took off after stopping in a VERY OLD bar. We went on Highway 24 north towards I-70. This is one of the most BEAUTIFUL rides we have been on. Going west on I-70 for a while, we rode on towards Steamboat Springs. Typical Yuppie vacation town, so we moved on. Took Highway 14, I think it was, to Walden Colorado, where we ate and spent the night in an old hotel/restaurant. Problem was, we couldn’t breath coz of the altitude!! The next morning we ate breakfast (incredible breakfast burritos!) then took off on 14 towards Fort Collins. Another mountainous ride, it was great!!! From Fort Collins, we rode to the Greeley Colorado HD dealership to look around. They had two Crossbones there, so Glenda was happy! We left there and rode to McCook Nebraska, and stopped at a Days Inn. We heard a lot of noise not far from the motel, went checked it out and they were having stock car races at the fairgrounds, so we spent the evening watching the races. The next morning we got up and as we were getting on the bikes, the rain hit, so we got out the rain gear and continued on. It rained HARD for about 75 miles then quit. By this time we were on Highway 36, and stayed on 36 east until we hit 75. 75 took us south to Topeka and we came home on 24 highway. It was a neat trip, and Glenda and I enjoyed being with each other. This trip kind of reaffirmed our commitment to each other and we realized how much we are meant for each other. Other than the rain, it was a great trip, and we saw parts of Colorado we had never seen before..

I LIKE it, Robin! It's a good ride report - short, good details, and personal. Good descriptions of places make me want to go there too. Thanks for posting it,

Jerry

I ride because it frees my mind from the tyranny of petty things.

I agree, Robin. Keep 'em comin'. I'm always interested in reading about someone's trips, especially when they are well written. Thanks for sharing.
