Ok kids, The rear shock has started leaking oil. I am going to contact BMW to see if they will warranty that shock as it only has 118,000 miles on it.
Now I need to figure out what to put back in there. Will change both front and back even though the front is still real good...... I think...... he he
Since those shocks are a bit pricey, I would like to get it right the first time. It appears the pair of shocks could be approaching half of what that bike would bring if I sold it
Any one been through this yet?? I believe Walt used a Works front shock and he was satisfied with that. I am wondering how long the after market shocks are good for.

John - Just a thought here but if you've been generally satisfied with the rear shock on your bike during those 118K miles how about just buying another one from salvage. Generally a salvage bike has a damaged front end not the rear. So, the rear shock should be perfectly good.....and cheap! Richard
Re: R1100RT Shocks
Yeah, and I just heard today that there is a motorcycle salvage yard in Ottawa, Kansas. I believe it is called OZ something. Hey, I just googled it and here it is: http://ozpowersports.com/Default.asp ...and...http://www.used-motorcycle-parts.org/ya ... om/?mcp=psRichard wrote:John - Just a thought here but if you've been generally satisfied with the rear shock on your bike during those 118K miles how about just buying another one from salvage. Re: R1100RT Shocks
Richard, and Shfls,
I think I should consider new shocks as I like that old bike and hope to get 200k on the odometer before I get a Gold Wing. If I install a used pair, I might be faced with the same problem sooner than I would like. Until now, I had never thought of how long shocks should last. One guy I talked to last week indicated a shock could be ready for a rebuild around 30k miles. I wonder how many folks really do something with their shocks that soon??
So far I have information from Works, Ohlins, Wilbers, and Hyperpro. There are more brands than that but they might just add to the problem of finding out which one is the best value. I hope someone can tell me what their experience has been with their after market shocks.
Another plus...... since I have a shortage of inseam length, most of the manufacturers offer a short version to lower the bike a little. It seems like the older I get, the shorter my legs get... he he
Thanks so much for your input.......................... PLEASE PRAY FOR SPRING !!! ( I started praying on Sept. 1 )

Well, ol' John, this is how I look at it. Everyday...that I wake up...is another day CLOSER to spring. Wake up enough days and it WILL be spring. If you don't wake up...it doesn't matter.John Desch wrote:Richard, and Shfls,

Sounds like you got enough info on your shocks. Now it depends on how deep your pockets are.
