Welcome to September! It appears that we'll have a day for riding that more fits the season. Right now predictions are for sunny and a high of 82 degrees . Now this is a destination that really takes us back to our roots, the reason ROMEO was founded: supporting small restaurants in small Kansas towns. Some of us have stopped here occasionally for pie, but to my knowledge we have never had an official lunch here. But that's about to change.
This is a community gem, I believe the only business in Soldier besides the post office, but it is a true community hub run by a really nice lady. Keep in mind that she runs this alone, sometimes with the help of her daughter so bring a little slice of patience when you show up to eat. But I'll guarantee you that the food is really home-cooked from scratch. It is also very small with a maximum seating capacity of 32 so plan on being flexible. It does help that we don't show up all at once.
To help with that, she is open for breakfast as well but if you're not there by 10:00 at the latest, you'll be staying for lunch. That's why I set the starting time as 10:30 for lunch so if those of you who want to eat breakfast show up 9ish o'clock you'll be able to slick up those plates of eggs and bacon by the time lunch riders show up at 10:30 and you can still hang out and visit with the lunch guys even if you have to stand up to make room!
While I was visiting with the owner to set this up she mentioned that she had remembered some of us stopping by for pie, but she didn't have any right now but we probably wouldn't want any pie anyway if we came for lunch.I told her not to underestimate a ROMEO's ability to eat pie, so she said, "well maybe I'll bake some pies next week just for you!" That's the kind of place this is!!
Oh, and BTW, although hamburgers are the best here, the Wednesday lunch special is homemade fried chicken.
So if you have a hankering to return to our ROMEO roots, saddle up and head to breakfast or lunch at:

RIDE REPORT: September 4, Soldier Grill, Soldier, KS
It was a perfect day for a ride to Soldier, KS. All the roads leading there are great to ride and the two big hills at the south end of Hwy 62 never disappoint. I had told her that she could expect between 20-30 and when all was said and done we ended up with 29 ROMEOS in attendance.
Some of the early-early birds were there and gone before even the early birds showed up. But I guess that did help because this is basically a one woman operation. However, her daughter happened to have the day off from her job and showed up to help so that was a plus. But amazingly everything went off without a hitch and we were all served pretty quickly after we ordered. And the food was excellent and portions were ample. The special was fried chicken, two pieces of white or dark, mashed taters/gravy and peas for $8.50 and the hamburgers were huge and juicy for I think about $5.50!
If you were unable to make it today you missed a good one, but if you're in this area you should drop in for some grub because it is worth the trip. But you better do it sooner rather than later because the owner is retiring at the end of December and if she can't get anyone to take over the Soldier Grill will be no more! It's a shame because this is a hidden gem and there aren't many places like this still going.
Enough rambling so I'll sum up by saying that it was a great day to be a ROMEO, and even better if you made it to Soldier today! Even Al made it today and he was supposed to be in Wisconsin! Thanks Al for taking some pictures before I got there so most got included except for the early-early birds.
