North Central Kansas Weekly Ride 5/26/21

I was strolling through Facebook looking to see who's hot buttons I could push when I tripped and fell into this place that we haven't been to before. I thought that I'm up for some good BBQ so I thought I'd give them a call. The hours are good. The weather looks good. So we're set up for next Wednesday. Huebner road is a straight shot to their front door, but according to my map it cuts through Fort Reilly. The one nagging question that has me confused,
is are we going to have to deal with any military restrictions? Or would it be better to chose an alternate route?
We've once again saved the world from self annihilation. So once again the world can keep spinning for at least another week. After all the trivial matters were taken care of we were able to focus on the more serious matter of when and where to launch from. The best determination was Casey's on Ohio and Iron @ 11:00.

Today couldn't have been a better day for riding. The day started with the usual dense fog between my ears. I got the dogs out and tried my best to clear the haze behind my eyes without self inflicted injury. I pondered whether or not to make breakfast or just wait until I got to Ogden. I figured if I pondered the problem long enough it would solve itself. But then another problem reared it's ugly head. That bane of adulthood. That nagging recurring issue that never seems to end. Having to figure out what to make for dinner EVERY DAY! FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! It certainly isn't for lack of choices. I have collected over 400 recipes, about 100 that I have printed. But I have gone grocery shopping with a thunderous growl in my stomach, and still found NOTHING that I wanted. My freezer is quite well stocked and the choices are plenty. I took my stack of printed recipes and started paging through them, looking for something that looked less revolting than the rest. Don't get me wrong. I chose all 400 recipes because they looked good to me. But at the moment food wasn't high on my list of desires. I found a cheesy chicken that looked pretty good, and it fit the bill. About 5 minutes prep time and into the slow cooker. I think I can deal with that. Next to the wheel, I think the slow cooker is the greatest invention of mankind. Now all I have to do is gather the necessary flotsam and jetsam for the ride and blast out. OH and DON'T forget to turn the slow cooker on! Keep in mind I'm the kind of guy who will walk from a bike on the lift to my tool box and by the time I get there I've forgotten what I was after. I'm waiting for the day when I find my keys in the refrigerator. Slow cooker on I headed out the garage to get the bike ready. I head out to the meeting point and to no surprise I was the first one there. After about 10 minutes I started expecting others to roll in. I was thinking about the route to Ogden when the realization hit me. YOU IDIOT! YOU'RE AT THE WRONG PLACE!! Due to force of habit or maybe my state of oblivion I found myself at the Iron Skillet instead of Casey's. I fired up and headed for Casey's. Fortunately I had enough time. I pulled up just in time to see Bruce Shields pull in. We chatting for a while and got a visit from a Wing trike rider who was there who wash his ride who told us that he saw a group go by a while ago that he thought we might be waiting for. It was a couple minutes before launch time and it looked like there were no more takers so we left. Puling into Ogden Bruce pulled in where he saw some bikes but I wasn't sure they were ROMEOs until I saw Emory Witt's bike. We got turned around and I saw a lot more bikes across the street. It looked more shady over there so I opted to park there. I was looking for the restaurant but still couldn't find it. I got the book circulating and went about the photo shoot, keeping an eye on the others to see where they disappeared to so I could follow suit. Getting inside I found the venue a bit smaller than I had envisioned. As more bikes rolled in I was wondering if we might overwhelm the place. After getting my shots I took my place in line to place my order. While waiting in line I noticed that Kai Sayson was able to come. He has been battling some health issues lately and has been missing many of the rides. It was great to see him out and about, and it was especially good to hear that he is CANCER FREE!
He needs a little time to fully recover but I'm confident that we'll see him out on his bike again. The menu was looking pretty good and I was having a hard time choosing. Knowing I had supper cooking at home I went light with the brisket sandwich and some mac and cheese on the side. The cook looked a little overwhelmed by our numbers but help finally arrived and it got easier for him. There were a number of old friends that we haven't seen for a while who joined us on this ride and it was great to see them again. Some of the guys were going to stop at a bike shop to see what they had for sale and I intended to tag along, but I got distracted and wandered off to get shots of the bikes that arrived after I went inside. Sorry I missed the ride. I fired up for the ride home and tried my best to remember how I got into town so I could find my way out. Things looked vaguely familiar as I left town and I started settling in for the ride home. Cruising down K18 I was in the zone and all was right with the world. So I thought. My internal GPS was out of calibration and I thought I was on the freeway. Although I did think it odd that the speed limit was 70MPH and not 75. Ignoring that discrepancy I motored happily on. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Suddenly and by surprise I70 loomed up
and it was only my superior riding skills
and Guzzi's generous braking ability that prevented me overshooting the entrance to I70. Finally on the slab I pressed on toward Salina. The farther west I got, the more ominous he western sky looked. Also I was in my usual fuel dilemma. No low fuel light yet. I figured if I made it to Abilene without the low fuel light coming on I'd press on all the way home. The sky grew darker and more ominous. Then a sign of impending doom. A pick up truck that looked like it was equipped communicate with Alpha Centauri came rocketing past me. The graphics on the side said something to the effect of "Storm Chaser, Intercept Truck". With trepidation I pressed on. I got to the I70 - I135 interchange and the angry sky was still farther west. When I got home I checked the radar and a big monster storm was over Hays and moving this way. Hunkered down in my recliner I'm going to sit out the storm. All in all it was a great day for a ride.
