We've stopped in here for pie a few times but the last official ROMEO ride I can find to this place was in March, 2011, so I think this almost qualifies as a new place! Rumor has it that the burgers are good and they will have a lunch special although that hadn't been decided by this morning, but I'll bet it will be special by next Wednesday! They are open for breakfast and serve it until 10:45, then switch over to lunch. So you decide, but I think 10:30 seems like a pretty good time to at least land at 605 Main Street in Alta Vista. And after you land, let's eat at:

The Barnyard Cafe
605 Main
Alta Vista, KS 66834

On top of pretty good food, the roads around Alta Vista are about as good as it gets around here. And if you haven't taken it, the Skyline Drive from Alma to Alta Vista is one you shouldn't miss either coming or going!

So I hope to see you around 10:30 in Alta Vista next Wednesday! Hope you can make it.

And I'll bring the donation can one more time so if you decide you want to contribute to maintenance of the website in our once a year funding request and you didn't get a chance to contribute last week, you can still throw a buck or two into the can.

RIDE REPORT: SEPTEMBER 26 BARNYARD CAFE, ALTA VISTA, KS

This morning as I walked out of my garage, it was about 52 degrees and the air had the fall crisp feel to it.There is nothing more satisfying than a fall ride if you are dressed just right. I had put on my chaps this morning for the first time this fall and it was just the ticket. I slipped the liner in my jacket, put my mesh gloves away and pulled out some medium weight leather gloves that seemed perfect for the occasion. So I headed west and decided to ride the super slab out so I could ride Hwy. 177 south, a road that I don't ride very often.

I turned on the FM radio and tuned it to NPR and some New Age music came on that was perfect for the occasion. I glided along, feeling the cool air pass by, listened to the music and took in the fall scene. As I headed south on K177 the colors were almost overwhelming. The sunflowers, bright yellow, were a perfect contrast to the green and emerging yellows and browns, the sun was beaming out between cloudy patches and then I rode by the highway boys giving the roadside it's fall clip, and the smell of freshly cut grass and wildflowers came wafting through my helmet.

There were farmers out cutting corn and several farms along the road, especially the Skyline Drive, had beautiful fall displays with all the fall colors and multi-colored pumpkins displayed with pride for passersby to enjoy, some appropriately accentuated with the American flag, gently fluttering in the slight southern breeze. It was a perfect midwestern pastoral scene laid out just right!

As I near my mid-70's it hits me that I am so fortunate to be able to enjoy the ride like I (we) do, week after week. The colors, the scents, the scenery, and lunch with some of the best friends a guy could ever have make me feel blessed. I opted out of my normal pie ride with my usual riding partners and took my time riding home alone, stopping occasionally and taking a picture or two of things that were of interest to me. I almost didn't want the ride to end so I prolonged it as long as I could. And now I'm home, reflecting upon how lucky we all are to get to do what we do. The most important thing, and sometimes we forget to do it, is to appreciate day to day how great it is to have worked our entire lives to be able to just enjoy life and do what we do. It's easy to take for granted, but once in awhile I try to just enjoy each day for what it is.

And now that I'm home, it's kind of back to the daily routine. My recent college graduate grandson asked me if I'd go help him shop for a car and I was thrilled to be asked and yes, I'm think that's pretty cool. And tonight it's out to dinner with my wonderful wife and an old college friend of hers visiting from out of town, and so, you know, the old daily routine isn't too bad either. So I hope you enjoyed your day as much as I did mine. And if not, guess what, you can take another shot at it tomorrow!

So here are a few pictures from my and (our) day today in no particular order. Enjoy...and BTW, it was a damned great day to be a ROMEO!!

Oh, I got so carried away I forgot to mention that there were 34 ROMEOS that were just as fortunate as I was today to enjoy what we do!!
