At lunch this Wednesday, Floyd Beck gave me a flyer for the “Ride the Flint Hills” dice run. The route itself is a bit over sixty miles, and Floyd figures it's a 240 mile round trip from Wichita. The ride takes place on Saturday, October 22, and benefits three Flint Hills non-profits: Symphony in the Flint Hills, The Volland Store, and Pioneer Bluffs. The cost is $20 in advance (thevollandstore.com) or $25 after October 15.
Registration starts at 9:00 AM at Pioneer Bluffs Ranch, on K177 north of Matfield Green, with the last bike out at 11:00 AM. Stops include The Symphony in the Flint Hills Art Gallery in Cottonwood Falls, the Hays House restaurant in Council Grove, and a final stop at The Volland Store off old K10 north of Alta Vista. There will be a vintage motorcycle display at the finishing point, and prizes awarded at 4:00 PM.
This looks like a good excuse for a nice autumn ride through the Flint Hills. I think Floyd is working one of the checkpoints, so you can give him a rough time if the dice don't roll your way...
