Wednesday North Central ROMEO Lunch Ride for 10-10-12
Posted: Fri Oct 05, 2012 8:41 pm
Guys - It seems to be getting harder and harder to come up with a new place each and every week but i keep plugging away trying to find 'em. My thanks this week, however, goes to Henry Burmeister from Holyrood who provided me with the name of this little place. Without his help my wife may have been cooking for all you guys because I was having no luck whatsoever finding a place open that we could go to. You guys would be surprised if I told you of all the places I call that we have been to previously that no longer have an operating telephone number. This is a tell tale sign that they're shut down and no longer in business. Sad!
The weather looks nice if a tad cool to start out in early in the mornng for some of you guys but we have a solution that should please you so be sure and note the time change for lunch. We've set it back a little to allow it to warm up a bit before heading out and also to accommodate this places main rush of business. We will arrive after their busiest peak and allow them a breather dealing with us at a slower pace since we don't have to return to work.
This destination is also out West a bit so we may get to see our new friends from Hays again. Seem like great guys so I you haven't had a chance to visit with them, do so and make 'em feel welcome.
I've heard that we may see a new bike or two in the parking lot. This is just part of that economic stimulus package that we are becoming so famous for. Hey, a new bike here and there for a dealership ain't just chump change now is it!

Guys - As we all know, the heat of the day always falls at 3:00 in the afternoon. The shift to a later lunch time seemed to fit everyones liking since a bit later start in the morning to take off for parts unknown meant the heated gear doesn't have to first, melt frost like it did at the earlier lunch time. From the comments I heard, most seemed pleased with this change so it will become the new 'norm' for our fall and winter outings. Frankly, unlike a few of you, I like sleeping in just a bit longer regardless of the weather.
I knew it would happen however that someone would not get the message and sure enough, several got there prior to the old lunch time which meant they had time to do some serious visiting. Actually, I'm glad they had time to tug at a few doors to find the place because all I ever noticed announcing the location was a small sheet of paper taped to a screen door with the daily special identified. Who would ever have known that it was a cafe? Whoever found the place first...good going! I did this all by phone so I was of no help in locating it.
The trip over was uneventful but enjoyable since I was trying out my new eyes. Really...I haven't been able to see colors in their true form in years and I was having myself a time seeing everything in sight. I mostly get jabbed in the ribs when I do this but I guess today she understood.
Claflin is a pretty little town that the sale of furniture has built. The Millers seem to be the only thing in town but I'll have to give credit where credit is due, they've spent it restoring the appearance of the downtown area. Every store front is perfectly manicured to have the appearance of an early day town in avery aspect although they are fake fronts to a myriad of furniture displays. Pretty unique and quite effective apparently.
The day being near perfect for a ride, we had 41 sign the attendance book but the cafe owner said 43 folks had been served so apparently a couple had failed to sign the book. Who knows, they could very well have won the coveted long distance award had they registered.
We got our new Hays guys back again and it appears they enjoy the group so I'm quite pleased about that and they even used the lunch as a spring board for an after lunch ride over to Marquette to take a peek at the Kansas Motorcycle Museum which they indicated they had never seen before. I'ts a honey if you've never been to it. It does Kansas proud and has been a Godsend to the little town of Marquette.
When Joyce and I arrived in Claflin, Joyce said she heard 'thunder' but I took no note of it since I saw nary a cloud and indeed it turned out to be nothing other than gorgeous weather all day.
The folks running the cafe were well prepared for us. My meal was on the plate and sitting right in front of me before I even sat down. In fact, I ate it prior to even going to the salad bar. Special of the day was meatloaf and I had both mine and half of hers. What a deal.
Mo's mini brewery is fairly close to Claflin, being located over in Beaver, and Gary brought along his 'jug' to be refilled so after lunch several of us ventured over there with him to have it refilled. While it was being filled we naturally wanted ice cream or pie but found they only had brownies or an ice cream sandwich. Some of us had the brownies in a baggie while a couple took the sandwich. Only in Beaver! It was two chocolate chip cookies with a square of ice cream in the middle. It looked better than the brownies. We tried calling Louie to tell him that his favorite waitress was still there and in 'prime 'form, but my phone had totally died. Someone get him to tell you the story....I couldn't do it justice!
The end of a good day cannot end without ice cream of some form or another so we high-tailed it to Marquette and met up with the Hays guys as they were just leaving for home after checking out the Museum and then Joyce and I ventured down to the Sundry Shop where the Hutch guys were just finished having ice cream. They kindly waited for us to sample some new peanut butter nut crunch that has now become my new all time favorite.
Oh yes, I think I had better take note of the days important statistics such as the high mileage rider who this week is not Nick Day although he was convinced he would be. Nope, it's Rick Reeves from Concordia with 151.4 miles and his cohort Gail Engle with 151 showing a second place. They said they really didn't get lost, they just took the scenic route. Yea..right!
Here's a list of the towns represented at lunch today.......
Abilene
Enterprise

If next week turns out as warm as the forecast predicts, you may plan on another ride out West somewhere. We need to cover some more of this area prior to winter which will be raising it's ugly head quite soon. When it gets cold, distance to lunch will be pulled back considerably so let's ride while we can!
