Wednesday North Central ROMEO Breakfast Ride for 7-25-12

Guys - I'm Baaaaack In The Saddle Again...........ooooops, wrong thought. Still haven't recovered from our 4000 mile trip to the wife's sisters house in Lewiston, Idaho. I finally got a chance to mark off of my bucket list one of the roads I have dreamed about for years. In particular, highway 12 from Missoula into Lewiston. Sign indicates 'Danger, curves next 99 miles. YES! And this was just the tip of the iceburg. Hell's Canyon was another.
After 22 years in the Motel business, the last thing that appeals to me is staying on one of them, so I decided to try out something a bit different. We planned our trip from the KOA directory and outlined our route from site to site. Distance varied but with the extreme heat in some areas it worked out just fine. Joyce took to it like a duck to water. She agreed she would give it a try the first nite and after that, all was fine. Thermarest sleeping pads are wonderful.
Most of the KOA places are refreshing and all are somewhat different but each have more for her to do of an outdoor variety than motels do so she got along well. Most places are full of camping trailers rather than tents and they have their own kitchens. I was in charge of meals for our cooking......I had a Jetboil kit and dried backpacking food but we didn't starve. I do know how to boil water which is all that is needed. Let me say that Mountain House is the brand to buy......tasty! We even had a collapseable dual sink for clean up after meals.....hardly roughing it! Only thing to remember is that between setting up a site and taking it down does seem to double your traveling time to anywhere. So does setting up for meals at rest areas. The handy Jetboil was always at the bottom of the trailer. Remember that!
KOA's are popular places for two wheel travelers so I had no lack of people to tell the ROMEO story to and I ran out of cards completely on the way up. We should have chapters starting up in a variety of states in no time.
But I digress.............

Guys - I really don't know what caused me to pick 10:00 o'clock as the time other than I usually like to sleep a bit late. We got up early anyway and left Lindsborg a tad before eight while it was cool. It had been a bit of time since I had been to Woodbine and by the fact that we seemed to have all the time in the world to get there, Joyce and I experimented with quite a few different roads leading to our chosed destination for the day. We actually headed South a couple miles to hit the road that leads from here to Roxbury. From there, several options present themselves but we chose the newly paved section that led to highway 15, just West of Tampa where we had gone about a month ago. Then we headed North to ride the wind for a while. Easy go'in let me tell you. The new VStar 950 was in its element just ticking over at a relaxed pace. I finally snicked it into 5th and excellerated to a mild 60 when I noticed a truck bearing down on me at speed. He passed and I backed it down to my comfortable 55 again so as to obey the speed limit. Actually my GPS was recording a solid 55 at an indicated 59 on the speedo. Corporate legalists can't be any to careful now can they.
At hwy 4 intersection, we turned East to Hope and hit town doing a slow 30 fortunately because the local LEO was on patrol right there at the turn into town. Don't want any nefarious speed demons in this quiet place was the signal and we were a model to be followed. North on main to the corner and and around the bend........naaaaa, we were early and it was still cool. We headed East and over to near Herrington where the road cuts North on a paved side road that I didn't remember so nturally that was our route. A cute little narrow paved road with a few curves that came out just at the West side of Woodbine. We turned East and headed for the cafe knowing we would be the first to arrive and waaaaaa, the parking lot was filled.
It seems that everyone from Salina and Topeka and Holyrood and Manhattan and Council Grove and Canton and Abilene and Herrington and Cuba, all had the same early morning cool thought as we did. Good old Hutchinson however was right on time at 10:00 am. Had we not posted breakfast that late, they may have chosen not to come. We had a great time and it's good to be back.
Everyone did a great job keeping things together in my absence. Thanks, Leonard for filling in a bit for me and there didn't appear to be any anarchy at all like you told me on the phone.
Oh my gosh, it just occured to me that I have failed to honor the high mileage rider of the week. My bad! It happens to be one of our group regulars and I feel terrible for slacking in my recognition to him. It's Norm Parker from Holyrood. Norm rides a Star 1300 he bought from Bobz Bikzs just a few weeks before I bought my Star 1100 and we have seen him nearly every week since. Great bike, Norm! Must be quite comfortable for all the places you've gone on it!
Now another thing I've overlooked is bike of the week. I did actually take a photo or two of it thinking in advance but failed to post ownership of it. Take a look see at the Triumph 2300 triple owned by Steve McGee of Salina and the physical size of this beast made it a no brainer for me to pick this week.
Sorry for these old timer lapses in memory but they seem to be coming more frequently as time moves on.
