South Central Lunch Ride: Wednesday, April 25, Noon

Next Wednesday looks like particularly good riding weather, so let’s get out and put some miles on the bikes. We’ll need to leave a little earlier to get to this week’s destination, so I’ve set the lunch for noon to allow a bit of additional travel time.

Buster’s is located in Sun City, about twenty miles northwest of Medicine Lodge. It’s about two and a half hours from Wichita, according to MapQuest (we always seem to get there more quickly by motorcycle...,) or 108 miles. We’ve been to Buster’s before, but it’s under new management now and the menu has changed. Sadly, the barbeque is gone; the new menu is primarily burgers and other sandwiches.

Sun City is a "ghost" town. There's not much there other than a church and Buster's. Still, they do a surprisingly good lunch business. River Road is Main Street, and Buster's is on the north side of the road.

You get to Sun City by turning west from US 281 onto River Road near the north edge of Medicine Lodge. River Road actually offers some curves and a few changes in elevation. There's virtually no traffic on the two lane blacktop, and it's a nice ride before lunch. You can also come in from the north, via US 281 and the county road that goes to Coates. The northern route is a little more scenic, in my estimation.

It looks as though the forecast for Wednesday has improved: high of ninety, light winds, and no chance of rain. Time to break out the mesh jacket and head for Sun City. I'm afraid that the turnout will exceed the estimate I've given the operator (again.) I'm always happy to be wrong in this sort of situation.

We had a great day to ride, an excellent turnout, and a very good lunch. The new owners were friendly, and seemed to get our rather large group served with a minimum of delay. Thirty-three people arrived on thirty-two bikes, traveling a total of 3044 miles (one way) to Sun City. Afterwards, Gen Bob led a few of us on a scenic ride through the Gyp Hills on the way to ice cream in Harper. (Bob probably knows all the ice cream places in the state...)
